Besstel Foundation Educates Santasi Market Traders on Mental Health Awareness

On the 10th October 2024, Besstel Foundation, a prominent mental health organisation in Ghana marking the world mental health day, took to the bustling Santasi Market in Kumasi to educate traders and shoppers on the importance of mental health care. This initiative was part of the foundation’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.

The project, which drew significant attention, provided market traders with practical information about recognising mental health challenges, seeking support, and managing stress in a high-pressure environment. The Besstel Foundation team, comprising mental health professionals, senior nurse and life patron Peter Hasler, C.E.O of the foundation Stella Bryant, George Bessa Simons, country director and volunteers, engaged the audience through interactive sessions, storytelling, and discussions tailored to their daily experiences.

Addressing a Critical Issue

Speaking at the event, Nash Momori, expert consultant with the foundation, highlighted the importance of focusing on mental health, especially for market traders who often face prolonged stress due to the demands of their work.

“Many people here are breadwinners, managing both the economic stress of trading and family responsibilities. It is crucial they understand the warning signs of mental health conditions and how to seek help,” Nash emphasised.

Interactive Sessions and Resources

Traders were taught simple techniques to manage anxiety, such as mindfulness exercises and relaxation methods. The team also distributed handouts providing contact information of the foundation’s services and tips on self-care.

The event featured testimonies from individuals who had previously sought help for mental health issues, providing relatable stories that resonated with the audience. “Hearing real stories helped many traders to realise that it’s okay to ask for help

Community Impact

The Santasi Market initiative reflects the Besstel Foundation’s broader mission of making mental health education accessible to all. By meeting people in their communities, the organisation aims to dismantle misconceptions and encourage early intervention.

Looking Ahead

As part of their October 2024 campaign, Besstel Foundation plans to extend their outreach to other markets and underserved communities across Ghana. With ongoing support from donors and partnerships with local institutions, the foundation is determined to make mental health resources available to everyone.

The Santasi Market outreach concluded with a heartfelt promise: the Besstel Foundation will continue to champion mental health awareness in every corner of Ghana, one community at a time.
